Short History Of Elementary Schools In Milpitas

Elementary schools in Milpitas sprouted from a long and humble history. During the 19th and early 20th centuries, children of Milpitas had the option of attending Air Point, Calaveras, or another school that was located at the current site of a Presbyterian church. Milpitas Grammar School was established on Main Street in 1912, marking the first school within the town. By the 1950s, the Milpitas Elementary School District was created to provide educational services to Kindergarten through eighth-grade residents. Joseph Weller Elementary and Anthony Spangler Elementary, which opened in 1956 under the titles of Sunnyhills and Milpitas Elementary, respectively, were the initial institutions of the district. In 1968, the district was renamed the Milpitas Unified School District. Two schools in the district, Gertrude Abel Elementary and Martin Murphy Elementary were closed in 1978 and 1983, respectively. The other elementary schools in the district include Burnett, Curtner, Mattos, Pomeroy, Randall, Rose, Sinnott, and Zanker.
